Well, they announced the winners. They are not really surprising, but not entirely satisfying, either. In 3/4 of the fiction categories, they just picked the Nebula winner [1]. That's no fun.

Short story- "Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience™" by Rebecca Roanhorse. Well, okay. It was a really good and important story.

Novelette- “The Secret Life of Bots” by Suzanne Palmer. I liked it, but I'm pretty disappointed that it won.

Novella- All Systems Red by Martha Wells. Ditto.

Novel- The Stone Sky by N. K. Jemison. Well-deserved, and an impressive hat trick to have won three years in a row, for each novel in a trilogy. (Disappointed that New York 2140 came in dead last, though.)

Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form- Wonder Woman. Umm, okay, representation and all, but really? Was it really better than Get Out?

Best Professional Artist- Sana Takeda. No complaints here.

Best Related Work- No Time to Spare by Ursula K. Le Guin. This is an interesting one to delve into the details of (see p.6 here; see also the vote tallying system here). It looks like Zoë Quinn actually got more votes for first place than anyone else, but seems to have not done well with people who didn't rank her first, allowing Le Guin to squeak by. In other words, people seem to either love or hate Zoë Quinn, and the haters seem to have edged her out of the award. I suspect this is the place where we most see the lingering influence of the Puppies, since there are known links between them and the Gamergaters whose shenanigans are described in Quinn's book.

Till next year…

[1] The Nebula winner that didn't win the Hugo, "A Human Stain" by Kelly Robson, didn't make the final slate for the Hugos. Though it is a weird and unsettling piece, and you should check it out.
