the first (gaijin) samurai
Nov. 12th, 2005 05:30 pmI was just reading a surprisingly detailed wikipedia article about a guy named William Adams. What a fascinating life. Stuff like this makes me want to go back for a doctorate in Japanese history instead of biochemistry. Maybe I'll be a biochemist for twenty years or so and then go study Japan. Then I'll retire by becoming a Zen monk. How's that sound?
I've spent most of the day reading wikipedia articles on Japanese and Chinese history (apparently before the Three Kingdoms period of China, the census said the population was 56 million, whereas afterwards it was 16 million. Wow). I spent most of Thursday reading about fructose, high fructose corn syrup, and diabetes. (The more I learn about the processes behind processed foods, the more inclined I am to avoid them.) It's such a temporal black hole, that damn wikipedia, but I can't really regret the time I spend there.
