Well, I thought "Hey, if I did Death, why not do Dream, then?" So I did.
I bent the "one song from one artist" rule a little in this one, maybe. But not really. I dunno. Oh well.
1. "Dream On" Depeche Mode [what you take won't kill you but careful what you're giving I almost cut this one because it doesn't really seem to have that much to do with actual dreams, but then reading the lyrics I realized that the song pretty well describes the plot of Sandman. So of course it then became indispensible.]
2. "Nice Dream" Radiohead [they dug me my very own garden Great song.]
3. "Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect" The Decemberists [just to lay with you there's nothing that i wouldn't do, save lay my rifle down This is arguably my favorite Decemberist's song, and more or less the inspiration for creating this playlist.]
4. "Dream On Me" Belly [in this misery, you've had enough of me Suddenly this song seems extraordinarily relevant to the news I got while writing this, but we'll talk about that later.]
5. "Dream TV" Sugarcubes [all my dreams are nothing but the repetition of last week's television This group sure had a lot of energy.]
6. "Sweet Dreams" Eurythmics [who am i to disagree? This is what they call "a classic."]
7. "When You Sleep" Cake [are they pulling weeds from the dusty soil, but then never rewarded with the fruits of their toil Unbearably clever. Love this one.]
8. "Woman Driving, Man Sleeping" Eels [walking and knocking on doors This is one of their most beautiful and intoxicating songs, in my opinion.]
9. "Sweet Dream" Jethro Tull [no one can see us in your sweet dream This one is kinda disturbing.]
10. "Sleeping In" The Postal Service [people thought that they were just being rewarded A really good dream song. What can I say?]
11. "Soft Velvety 'Fer" MC Honky [it had teeth, human teeth, which was not... very nice This one never fails to crack me up.]
12. "Lovedream" Liszt [I think a little romantic piano does well in here.]
13. "As The World Falls Down" David Bowie [a kind of pale jewel, open and closed You could argue that this is not really a dream song, but I would argue that it is inseparable from the dream sequence in Labyrinth and thus deserves to be on this list as much as anything.]
14. "I Don't Sleep I Dream" R.E.M. [i'll settle for a cup of coffee, but you know what i really need Just the name of the band qualifies them for a place on the list, I think.]
15. "Sweet Dreams" Tori Amos [you say that you have 'em, i say that you're a liar She really deserves a place here, too.]
16. "Dreaming" Smashing Pumpkins [pleasure's real or is it fantasy Originally a Blondie song, I think. A pleasure.]
17. "Porcelain" Moby [in my dreams i'm dying all the time This song is very dear to me. And I die pretty frequently in my dreams, too.]
18. "Heirloom" Björk [i swallow little glowing lights my mother and son baked for me This is a touching song.]
19. "Busby Berkeley Dreams" The Magnetic Fields [we still dance on whirling stages Busby Berkeley was apparently responsible for many of the huge, massively choreographed dance scenes in the old Hollywood musicals. This song makes me think of my recently deceased uncle.]
20. "Life Is But A Dream" Tanya Donnelly [ours Atmospheric.]
Hmm. Dream songs tend to be long. This one comes in at just over 80 minutes. The first to be cut would probably be Eurythmics, because it's just too obvious. Next would be Sugarcubes, 'cause c'mon. That song's kind of annoying.
Top Five Dream Songs:
5. "Heirloom"
4. "Nice Dream"
3. "When You Sleep"
2. "Porcelain"
1. "Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect"
Honorable mentions to "Sleeping In," "Busby Berkeley Dreams," and "Woman Driving, Man Sleeping."
And after I thought, "Hey, why not do all of the Endless, then?" Destiny would be kind of hard, but fun. My collection maybe isn't as geared towards Destruction as some people's, but it'd still be fun to do. Desire would be a kick in the pants, and Despair would be a piece of cake (though narrowing it down might be hard). And Delirium would be an absolute Delight. So, that's my mission. Destiny is currently in progress.
