I notice a lot of people who are active in communities have friends-only LJs. The only reason I can come up with for this is that they encountered people in communities who didn't like them who then proceeded to harass them at home. I'm hopeful I won't have to deal with that, myself, but a community like convert_me seems like an easy place to make enemies...
