So, when I was writing my little novel last November [the italics on "novel" mean you're supposed to say it all snooty-like, like "I regret to inform you that, alas, I won't be able to attend your quaint little soirée. I'm working on completing my novel."], I came up with the idea of making a mix CD to go along with it, with one song for every chapter. Certain albums and songs really helped me get into just the right state of mind for writing certain sections, so I thought it might be fun to share songs that I felt really captured the mood I was going for in a given chapter. (I'm talking like the novel is actually good and that people might actually like it. I'm far from certain that is the case.)

Well, I've only just formalized the track listing, and I'm here to tell you about it.

Most of the tracks were chosen primarily for overall mood and not for lyrical content, though sometimes some of the lyrics fit pretty well, anyway. And really, Radiohead's "2+2=5 (The Lukewarm)" could be the theme song for the whole book... Anyway.

Prologue: "Sit Down. Stand Up. (Snakes & Ladders)" by Radiohead
Chapter 1: "Clair de lune" by Claude Debussy
Chapter 2: "You Can Fall" by Broadcast
Chapter 3: "Come In Alone" by My Bloody Valentine
Chapter 4: "If Only Tonight We Could Sleep" by The Cure
Chapter 5: "Precious Things" by Tori Amos
Chapter 6: "Sometimes" by My Bloody Valentine
Chapter 7: "Moonlight Sonata" by Beethoven
Chapter 8: "Requiem: Sequentia: Lacrimosa" by Mozart
Chapter 9: "Like Cockatoos" by The Cure
Chapter 10: "The Pan Piper" by Miles Davis
Chapter 11: "Inertia Creeps" by Massive Attack
Chapter 12: "Like Spinning Plates" by Radiohead
Chapter 13: "2+2=5 (The Lukewarm)" by Radiohead
Chapter 14: "Hidden Place" by Björk.

As you can perhaps gather, the albums I listened to the most were Amnesiac and Hail to the Thief by Radiohead, Loveless by My Bloody Valentine, Mozart's Requiem, Mezzanine by Massive Attack, Sketches of Spain by Miles Davis, The Noise Made By People by Broadcast, and Vespertine by Björk.

Currently I've got a word count of about 55,000, and I'm about halfway through chapter 13.

Theoretically, once I've completed and edited the first draft I'll make mp3 files of all the tracks available to those who agree to actually read the damn novel and tell me whether it sucks or not.

I have all of those, I think. Like, all of them. Except maybe the Massive Attack. I rule.
