It's snowing. It's really snowing. Like gusting, billowing, everything is white SNOWING. It makes me so happy to see it. The constant and pervasive sense of cold that characterizes winter in Japan (what with their steadfast refusal to insulate or install central heating) was beginning to wear on me, but I'll bear it gladly if there's snow. Snow!

I love a proper snow, especially when I don't have to go out in it and can just sit there by the window and watch it cover everything.

So do the Japanese just not get cold, or do they think insulation/central heating is too expensive or what? Seems like such a technologically advanced society could slap fiberglass insulation or a furnace in a building.

They get cold. They're always complaining about it. I think it comes down to the cost issue, in the end. I guess. I dunno. It seems like insulation should pay for itself in reduced heating/electric bills, but whatever... In Hokkaido they definitely go all out in the insulation/heating department, though.

Driers, dish washing machines, and garbage disposals are pretty rare in Japan, too.

The cold is easier to cope with when there's something to show for it. Snow validates the temperature and thus makes me happy too. These sunny days in Tokyo mock my weather senses and confuse me. I need to move to Hokkaido to be at my accustomed latitude... enjoy your snow!

I agree completely. At least in Vegas winter never actually gets cold, so there's not this sense of getting all the crappy aspects of winter without the payoff.
