I came across this today in the introduction to an 18th century diary:

"The use of leeches, once thought to be no more than a quaint colonial custom, has proved to be valuable in modern microsurgery, and it is entirely possible that bloodletting itself will prove to have benefits of which we are currently unaware."

Actually, I've read about modern usage of leeches, particularly in reattachment surgery and stuff like that where there's danger of two much blood collecting in the reattached part or surgery site. Leeches keep it nice and clear. I'm a little suspicious about the merits of bloodletting, though...
