矛盾

This is kind of a Republican-sounding thing to say (or maybe it's more of a white male thing to say), but this is an amusing contradiction in terms to me:

"[Our university] does not discriminate in admissions, educational programs, or employment against any individual on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual preference, national or ethnic origin, age, disability, or veteran status. University policy also includes affirmative action..."

It'd be more of a contradiction in terms if it didn't use the word "against", since there's the point that discriminating in favor of some groups isn't necessarily discriminating against the other groups (but in practice it can turn out that way, of course).

But yeah, that does strike me as a little amusing.

To give favor to one group is to withhold it from another. It makes about as much sense as separate but equal. I understand the reasoning behind it, and I'm not sure I'd say I'm against it as such, but let's call a spade a spade. Using race or gender as a factor in deciding admission is discrimination, and reverse discrimination is still discrimination.
